The Vanuatu Islands: Location, Climate and Geography

Vanuatu is a Y shaped string of 83 picturesque holiday islands that peep out of the spectacular South Pacific, framed by striking rock faces and pristine beaches, beautiful coral reefs, lush tropical gardens and palm trees swaying to the rhythm of the soothing breeze. Sitting between latitude 13° South and 23° South and longitude 166° East and 172° East, the islands are known for their geographical diversity.

The total land area is approximately 12,200 square kilometers and the territorial waters cover 450,000 square kilometers.

These holiday islands enjoy a tropical maritime climate with about 235 cm of rainfall annually, light trade winds and mercury levels in Port Vila rising to about 29°C on an average day.

Vanuatu’s Population

Vanuatu is a melting pot of over 100 different cultures and 200,000 people! A full 95% of the population are ‘Ni-Vanuatu’ (indigenous). Australians, New Zealanders, Europeans, Asians and other Pacific Islanders make up the rest. You’ll find over 20% in the two main cities, Port Vila and Luganville.

A peaceful holiday amidst more than 30,000 people in the capital Port Vila may seem next to impossible… But if a true sense of seclusion is what you seek, you know where you’ll find it!

A glance at Vanuatu’s Rich History

Vanuatu, or New Hebrides as it was known prior to 1980, has been inhabited for over 4,000 years. It was first discovered in May 1606 by a Spanish Explorer, Captain Pedro Fernandez de Quiros. Captain James Cook followed de Quiros in 1774.

Vanuatu received its independence on July 30, 1980, after 74 years of British and French governance. December 1994 marks the dismemberment of the 11 local Government Councils into six Provinces, which continue to be ruled by the National Government.

Vanuatu’s Languages

There are 110 indigenous languages commonly spoken in Vanuatu, in addition to the three official languages - English, French and Bislama. English and French are the main languages used for all business purposes.
